Valentine’s Day Love Rituals

Can you believe January has already come to an end? The holiday season has left just as fast as it came, and in its place, we are left with a collective sigh from all the single souls across the city, as storefronts and shops turn red, pink and everything heart-shaped. A lovey-dovey madness for some, and the most perfect day of the year for others; Valentine’s Day. If you’re anything like me, you’ve had a fair share of ice cream eating, movies in bed and feeling sorry for yourself every time this time of the year came around. Sometimes it feels as though the only worth you have in society is as good as your relationship looks (or is!). But, fear not, I’m here to remind you that Valentine’s day is not only a day for romantic love, there are many others that are just as important. 

This is the perfect moment to stop and shift our focus inward, allowing ourselves to explore the beauty of self-love. In this blog, we will take a look at self-love rituals that we can all practice on Valentine’s Day and thereafter.  These rituals can help deal with negative thoughts and emotions one might experience on the day of love, especially when surrounded by numerous triggers. It’s totally okay to be single on Valentine’s Day, or even if you are not single, taking the day to show some love to yourself can be very beneficial.

Here are some rituals and tips to embrace love and inner peace on Valentine’s day or any day:

Nourishing Self Care – Self Love
Starting the day off right and having a morning routine can be one of the hardest things to achieve consistently, especially with all of the stresses, worries and emotions of yesterday and tomorrow. One extremely helpful way to make your day take off on a good note is with stillness and meditation. Pick a comfortable place at home and  begin to breathe slowly. Focus on the sound and frequency of your breath. With each inhale and exhale, empty your mind of all those worries and concerns you might have lingering around. This stillness will be what keeps you in the present moment. During this time, you could also surround yourself with your favorite crystals, or even hold them in your hands, focusing on the loving and positive energy you want to give your entire being for the rest of the day.  There are many different ways to meditate –  find which one or ones resinate with you.

Self Care looks different to everyone – for some it may be a journaling ritual every morning, for me it’s eating pizza and watching my favorite rom-com on days I’m feeling low energy. Some ways to show yourself self care energetically include affirmation ceremonies, energy cleansing baths,  and artistic or creative expression, such as painting, singing, dancing, etc. Whatever self care is to you, make sure to set aside time to reflect and give it to yourself. Who says you need a significant other to enjoy a date? Explore the power and beauty of your own company, as spending quality time with yourself is a great way to recharge and reconnect with the inner you. 

Connect to Nature – Feel Love
Another easy way to incorporate love is by creating a connection to nature and valuing that time. Go outdoors, take a look around you, and notice if there are birds, trees,  how the wind sounds, how the sky looks, and how it makes you feel. Use this moment to really take it all in. Being able to observe nature and appreciate its beauty is a great way to remind your spirit and body just how connected you are to nature and the universe as a whole. Spending this time outside serves as a reminder of just how beautiful Mother Nature is.  Looking up at the vast sky and towering trees humbles us and thereby provides a calming effect on the nervous system.

Have you ever heard someone say they need to touch grass or hug a tree? They mean this quite literally! Nature has this effect on the mental health and the spiritual body that puts things into perspective, in a way that might not have been as clear before.

Nourishing Love – Give Love
Natures most powerful gift is love.   Love a person, a plant, an animal and it responds with gratitude.  Yes, sometimes it may feel like we are in a constant state of giving and not receiving.  However, the exchange does not always happen immediately.  When we open our hearts and are loving ourselves, loving nature, loving people, then the gateways to exchange burst open. The next time you go to pick up a loaf of bread from the supermarket, exchange a smile and a few words with the cashier; on your way to work, say “Good Morning” to the shopkeeper or garage attendant you pass by every day; smile at a stranger. Another great way to nourish love is through donating time. Organizations such as NY Cares are great for the busy person who may not be able to commit to extended time but can choose to volunteer for a day or longer. Get out of your comfort zone, unlock the love within and share it with the world.

Reiki Reflection
Sometimes embracing love can be very difficult whether due to lack of time, deep wounds, stress, traumas and other obligations. One major benefit of Reiki is receiving an energetic flow that is both relaxing and healing. Being able to accept this energy can restore harmony in one’s life, open the heart to love and eliminate blockages that might still be stored in the physical body or energetic body. Reiki sessions can help you tap into your inner goddess, your higher powers, and spiritual energy by accessing into your confidence and giving you a great sense of empowerment to conquer whatever the world throws at you. Finally, don’t forget that Valentine’s Day is truly just another day – an excuse to take advantage of to deepen the connection with ourselves and those we love. These intentional acts of love eventually start to add up and become the norm in how we treat ourselves and how we show up for others. Taking charge of each of our individual healing journeys is a beautiful thing. Perform and integrate these rituals this upcoming V-Day and remember you can always have that ice cream afterwards.
