Emotions are the gateway to our understanding. Often, we label emotions like anger, frustration, or sadness as “negative,” but they are neither good nor bad. They are simply your subconscious mind communicating with your conscious self. Emotions are messengers. They are the gateway to understanding deeper parts of yourself, to becoming more aware, and to growing into the person you’re meant to be.

Ways to Understand and Process Emotions
Understanding emotions requires you to slow down and pay attention to how you’re feeling and why. Here are some effective ways to tap into your emotions and gain deeper clarity:
1. Journaling
Writing down your thoughts and emotions is a powerful tool for self-reflection. When you journal, you give yourself a safe space to explore feelings that may have been buried or difficult to understand. Over time, patterns will emerge that can provide insight into why you’re feeling a certain way.
2. Meditation
Meditation helps calm the mind and allows you to observe your emotions without judgment. By creating a space of stillness, you can better listen to your inner voice and understand what your emotions are trying to communicate.
3. Hypnosis
As a hypnotist, I’ve found that clients often discover deeper layers of their emotions through hypnosis. When someone expresses that they’ve been feeling intense, unjustified emotions like anger or sadness, I often ask them what happened two days ago. This is because it typically takes two days for the subconscious mind to process events that, at the time, may have seemed minor. These events may tap into deeply rooted past experiences that are unresolved.
Similarly, when it comes to depression, it often takes about six months of emotional processing for it to set in. Understanding these timelines can help you connect the dots between your current emotions and past experiences, enabling you to heal and grow.
4. Speaking Your Thoughts Out Loud
Sometimes, saying things out loud helps make your feelings more tangible and real. Speaking to yourself or sharing your thoughts with a trusted friend can help you gain perspective and release emotions that may have been held inside for too long.
5. Tapping or EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)
Tapping is an alternative healing method where you use your fingers to tap on specific meridian points on your body while focusing on emotional pain or negative feelings. EFT can help release emotional blockages, allowing you to clear unresolved emotions and feel more at peace.
The key to being your authentic self is recognizing that your emotions are tools for growth. Instead of suppressing or judging your emotions, lean into them. Ask yourself: Why am I feeling this way? What is my subconscious trying to tell me? By understanding your emotions, you gain awareness, and with awareness comes the opportunity to grow and live more fully in alignment with your true self.
Be kind to yourself through this process. Authenticity is a journey, and part of that journey is accepting all parts of you—your joy, your pain, and everything in between. By embracing and understanding your emotions, you’re opening the door to deeper self-awareness and, ultimately, personal growth.
