Is Digital Detox Really Important?

What’s the harm? I’m staying on top of things: responding to emails, texts and keeping up with the news. So, what’s the harm in staying connected?

As a born and raised New Yorker, it’s easy to get caught up in the constant whirlwind of emails, social media updates, and endless scrolling. We’ve all been there – feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and disconnected from the real world. It’s time to hit the reset button and embark on a digital detox adventure to kick those unhealthy habits to the curb and introduce new, enriching habits that will leave you feeling refreshed, renewed and ready to conquer the world! Really? Refreshed and Renewed? Why?

So, let’s first dive in and explore how to unplug and recharge for a healthier you with these 10 steps:

Step 1: Acknowledge the Need for Change
First things first, recognize the signs that it’s time for a digital detox. Ask yourself, are you constantly checking your phone even during meals or before bed? Do you feel anxious when you’re away from your devices? Acknowledging these behaviors is the first step towards positive change.

Step 2: Set Clear Goals
Before you begin your digital detox journey, set clear goals for what you want to achieve. Whether it’s reducing screen time, improving sleep quality and getting a good amount of sleep, or reconnecting with loved ones, having specific objectives will keep you motivated and focused on the reason why you want to do a digital detox in the first place.

Step 3: Create a Digital-Free Zone
Designate a specific area in your home where digital devices are off-limits. This could be your bedroom, dining area, or a cozy reading nook. Creating a tech-free sanctuary will help you unwind and engage in meaningful activities without distractions. Personally, my husband and I make sure that we don’t have a television in our bedroom so that our bedroom is connected with sleep and winding down for the evening.

Step 4: Digital Decluttering
Just as you declutter your physical space, it’s essential to declutter your digital space too. Sort through your apps, emails, and social media accounts. Unsubscribe from irrelevant newsletters (hello, thousands of unread mail), unfollow negative accounts, and organize your digital life for a smoother and more organized experience.

Step 5: Introduce Mindful Practices
Now that you’ve cleared the digital clutter, it’s time to introduce mindfulness into your daily routine. Start your day with a few minutes of meditation or deep breathing exercises. Take a moment to just be and appreciate the present. These practices will help you stay grounded, reduce stress, and boost your overall well-being.

Step 6: Embrace Analog Activities
Remember the joy of reading a physical book, taking a leisurely walk, or engaging in a hands-on activity? Engage in these activities during your digital detox whether it be learning a musical instrument, painting, dancing, or exploring the world of urban gardening in New York City (which is definitely possible and doable, by the way!).. Rediscovering these activities can be incredibly fulfilling and meaningful – you might just surprise yourself at how many activities are actually worth nurturing.

Step 7: Form Human Connections
A digital detox is the perfect opportunity to rekindle meaningful connections and spend some quality time together. Plan in-person meetups with friends and family, engage in face-to-face conversations, and create lasting memories that don’t involve screens. Catch up over a delicious cup of coffee, a lunch special you’ve been wanting to check out, or even indulging in some unique dining experiences during NYC’s Restaurant Week!

Step 8: Set Boundaries
As you reintroduce digital devices into your routine, be sure to set clear boundaries. Designate specific times for checking emails and social media, and stick to them. This way, you can enjoy the benefits of technology without letting it take over your life in a more organized way. That is part of the goal with doing a digital detox – it’s not to necessarily say that all things digital are bad but rather finding the right balance.

Step 9: Practice Gratitude
Time and time again we’ve spoken about how gratitude is a powerful tool for cultivating a positive mindset. Keep a gratitude journal to jot down the things you’re thankful for each day and focus on the positive aspects of your life – which will help you stay motivated, optimistic, and renewed.

Step 10: Reflect and Adapt
At the end of your digital detox adventure, take time to reflect on your journey. What habits worked well for you? Which ones were challenging? What would you do differently? How often would you consider doing a digital detox? Use this insight to adapt your lifestyle moving forward and finding that sweet spot between the digital world and the real world.

At Self Empowered Minds, we advocate for the importance of taking time for yourself to reset your mind, body, and soul. Here’s why: when we swipe through social media or check email, the anticipation causes a spike in our dopamine – the motivation hormone. But since our bodies are always trying to stay in balance, our dopamine levels are lowered. Over time, we now need more excitement, more digital connection, to bring that same dopamine high that we were previously experienced. In a short period of time, our dopamine levels are now out of balance and so we are less and less excited and motivated. Doing a routine digital detox allows ours bodies to return to balance.

So, don’t be afraid to unplug and recharge – it might be exactly what you need to find joy while living in the moment!
